Barbara Rosenblat's renowned expertise with accents comes to the fore in this New York City crime drama as she seamlessly transitions among dozens of characters. When a film star is murdered outside New York Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Cooper's island getaway, local police initially think the ADA is the victim. Despite orders to stay away from the investigation, Alex must find the killer. Rosenblat shows equal proficiency with the dialogue of a black downtown vice cop, a psychotic Israeli immigrant, a Brooklyn detective, and a room full of upper crust sycophants. Both major and minor characters receive the same spirited performance from the queen of audio. Narrative passages race along like turning pages after midnight.

Novelist Benet Archdale and housemaid Carol Stratford are two young, single parents who have no reason to know each other. They become tangled in a nightmarish spiral of kidnap, fraud, family violence and death. Ruth Rendell creates psychological suspense in thrillers that are compulsively readable or, in this case, listenable. British actress Imelda Staunton's reading is perfectly paced, and the characters are well defined. You'll have a hard time turning it off.

This is the best one yet.
