Acclaimed neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett narrates her series of essays in this brief but sprightly introduction to the brain. In her erudite, enthusiastic voice she repudiates the neuroscience myths of past ages--such as the "triune brain," a layered brain of increasing sophistication--and describes the brain as a complex arrangement of neurons that perceives data and acts based on prior experiences within its social and physical environment. Using clear, down-to-earth analogies and metaphors, she illustrates how neurons communicate and cooperate. (The airport hub example is a very effective illustration.) Barrett's goal is to give compelling and comprehensible information to a general audience. In this production she has definitely succeeded.

Dr. Plotkin is an ethnobotanist who recounts his experiences searching for new medications in the Amazon rain forest. He makes an impassioned plea for the world to stop destroying this irreplaceable resource. Since the author reads his own work, we can rely on the pronunciation of some unusual botanical terms; however, his voice (presumably not trained for performance) lacks the enthusiasm and fascination the words suggest. Furthermore, with no chapter references and few pauses between sections, transitions, such as the change of location from Ecuador to Massachusetts, are awkward.
