Louis Drax is an unusual 9-year-old boy. Called “wacko boy” at school and having survived several near deadly challenges, including cot death, food poisoning, and electrocution, he is determined never to make his mother cry. While on a picnic, Louis falls from a cliff and nearly drowns, surviving only in a coma. Dr. Pascal Dannachet attempts to waken Louis and in the process becomes embroiled in the secrets of the Drax family. Jeff Woodman is wonderful. As Louis he sounds like a difficult and uncertain child. Gerard Doyle’s rich tones expertly portray Dr. Dannachet’s confusion, fear, and pity. This unconventional psychological thriller with brilliant performances from both narrators will leave you lost in thought for some time.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
