You can almost hear the opening theme to the classic American Western THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, the movie that inspires the lovely 19-year-old Nayeli to gather together a ragtag group of friends and set out on a mission. Their goal is to cross the Mexican border into the U.S. and recruit seven men, including her father, to help repopulate her village and save them from evil banditos. Narrator Susan Ericksen ably portrays each heartfelt character and delivers Spanish with confidence and ease. At times heartbreaking, at other times laugh-out-loud funny, this is a gritty and gratifying adventure.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
