A futuristic tale of woe, the latest release by Manil Suri, imagines a postapocalyptic Pakistan. The female narrator’s voice is gentle, soft, and full of longing, both for her missing spouse and for better days. Her pace is steady, her tone is level, and her words are faintly tinged—without being distracting—with a South Asian accent. She infuses the dialogue with a variety of depth—deeper voices for males, heavy accents to distinguish between those who are traditional from those who are more modern. The use of two narrators, one male and one female, is an interesting and necessary choice when the point of view shifts to the male protagonist. The listener should be aware that there is mature sexual content throughout this volume.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
