THE UP SIDE OF DOWN

WHY FAILING WELL IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS

Mia Barron’s tone, enunciation, and phrasing are a good fit for the assertive writing that makes this book so interesting. McArdle says that failures can open doors to creative breakthroughs as long as those who fail have the opportunity to reflect on what they’ve learned and continue to move forward with their ideas. “We should stop spending so much energy trying to avoid failure or engineering it away,” she says. The sardonic edge to some of Barron’s performance mostly serves to forward these arguments but periodically makes the author’s message sound confrontational. With enlightening insights about the way we accept or punish failure and engaging human stories, this is a fast moving must-hear audio for anyone interested in the psychology of risk-taking.

    EVERY DAY I READ

53 WAYS TO GET CLOSER TO BOOKS

Rosa Escoda offers a warm, inviting narration of advice on living a well-read life. Hwang, author of the novel WELCOME TO THE HYUNAM-DONG BOOKSHOP, reflects on her relationship to books and suggests ways to fit more reading into our lives, as well as ways to read more broadly and more deeply. It's all done with a light and personal touch--Hwang talks about why a book club might be a good fit (or not), and about how she tackled the problem when she found her bookshelves starting to overflow. Shanna Tan's translation from the Korean sounds smooth and natural, and Escoda, with a lovely British accent, pronounces Korean words fluently. This is an audiobook for booklovers, and it'll make you eager to find your next read, or listen. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine

100 RULES FOR LIVING TO 100

AN OPTIMIST'S GUIDE TO A HAPPY LIFE

While a brief introduction to this audiobook is voiced by Dick Van Dyke himself, the balance is assigned to his friend Tom Bergeron. He does a remarkable, impeccable, and simply wonderful job, narrating with a rhythm and tonality similar to Van Dyke's. One might believe one is listening to the 100-year-old actor himself. In addition to talking about his life, Van Dyke also quite candidly describes living with the health and mobility issues that have touched him in his most recent years. Throughout the presentation, anecdotes and vignettes thoughtfully portray the pivotal influences on the man and his sensibilities. The novel approach of presenting the ever optimistic Van Dyke's "rules for living" works effectively.
