Lindy was a happy, athletic girl until she was attacked one night in her own quiet neighborhood. This audiobook begins with this revelation of violence and spends the subsequent hours examining the crime, its aftermath, and its many and varied suspects--the story's first-person narrator being a part of that group. Kirby Heyborne voices the narrator with an eerie calm and a slow, methodical pace, both suited to the novel's languid Louisiana setting. However, given the dark subject matter, these features often give the story a creepiness that doesn't seem intended. All in all, Heyborne's performance is capable; his dialogue is well defined and his portrayal of individual characters is believable. The only problem may be that one does not want to believe any of it.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
