by Nancy Willard ; illustrated by Mary GrandPré ; read by Ed Sala ‧ RELEASE DATE: Feb. 4, 2005
Ed Sala's stolid narration brings this fantasy about a lonely man and his broom comfortably to earth. During a visit to a country store, a man admires a captivating handmade broom and buys it. When he discovers the broom can dance, he falls in love with it. Trouble begins when the broom is coveted by another and stolen. A bittersweet ending leaves listeners musing. Except for the sibilant sweep of the broom, Sala relates the story unadorned. His delivery works well to ground what could otherwise be too flighty a tale. His avuncular tones invite listeners to create their own meaning for this unusual story, uninfluenced by a subjective reading.

Author/narrator Coelho’s bright, friendly first-person narration brings 12-year-old Relic Hamilton to life. When Relic encounters a dangerous genie in his grandfather’s antique shop, he leaves his ordinary London life behind for a supernatural adventure that transports him through history and around the globe. While the journey has thrills and scary moments, the characters always have hope—a central theme of the audiobook. Coelho brings variety to the voices of his other characters, like Relic’s grandfather’s “Jamaican-teacher voice” and the gravelly rumble of a pirate captain from the Age of Sail who sounds exactly like an archetypal pirate ought to.

James constructs a new version of Wonderland and sends the original Alice’s granddaughter, Alyce, into it to solve the war between night and day. Narrator Kristin Atherton is magical. She creates distinctive voices and enhances the whimsy as Alyce meets the March Hare and the Mad Hatter as well as new characters—a friendly fox in a paper sailor’s cap and a caterpillar who is eating a Joyce book that he declares indigestible. Alyce must stop the war between the Sun King and the Queen of the Moon; they keep turning the lights off and on without warning, making the stars disappear and confusing the cows. Atherton’s facility with the fanciful verse reminiscent of the original story is a particular delight.
