by Natasha Pulley ; Read by Theo Solomon ‧ RELEASE DATE: Jan. 22, 2021
Theo Solomon narrates this work of speculative time-travel fiction. The story is set in real places in the United Kingdom; sometimes the timelines are close to actual historical events, and sometimes they're not. Nevertheless, Solomon's smooth and steady delivery keeps the genre-bending elements rooted so firmly in reality that listeners will start second-guessing what is real and what is fiction. As the stories move in and out of real time and from the north to the south of the UK, his accents and characterizations always make clear whether the story is taking place in London or Scotland. The pacing is relentless, so listeners should be prepared to binge on this audiobook.

Beatrice Grannò narrates this historical romantasy audiobook with careful pacing and a soft Italian accent. Ravenna enters a sculpting competition in a desperate bid to save her brother and accidentally reveals her forbidden magical talent. The immortal Luni family, interested in Ravenna’s abilities, forcibly takes her to Florence. Saturnino, the family’s heir, is a merciless taskmaster but Ravenna can’t help but be drawn to him. A pawn for many players including the Medici and even the Pope, Ravenna walks a fine line. Grannò narrates like she’s letting listeners in on a secret, and it’s a particularly delightful choice for an audiobook full of political intrigue and plenty of romance.

Kristin Atherton gives a masterful performance of this historical fantasy. Every first daughter in the Harding family is cursed to bring disaster, and in 1592 Cybil experiences this firsthand. Miriam is a creature of darkness who feeds her immortality with the souls of mortals, and Cybil's soul calls to her more than any other. In exchange for Cybil's soul, Miriam agrees to allow it to reincarnate. Atherton voices Miriam in a carefully paced sultry tone, perfectly conveying her desire for Cybil's soul--and later for something more. From Cybil's wrathful father and grieving mother to fearful, desperate Cybil herself, Atherton differentiates characters with ease. Atherton's emotionally charged performance of this historical fantasy will tug at listeners' heartstrings.
