This is the second Anna Pigeon mystery set at the Natchez Trace National Park in Mississippi. The plot concerns a murder in a prominent family and Anna's ongoing problems with a subordinate who resents working for a woman. As is increasingly true in this series, the story emphasizes character development and emotional intro-spection and downplays action and descriptions of the park. Barbara Rosenblat is, as always, astonishingly able to take on all of the nuances of voice that the material requires. And her narration maintains the pace between conversations nicely. An excellent performance is marred only by audible breathing.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
