For the first few minutes of this recording one may feel that Patrick Cullen's reading is far too flat and mechanical. But presently one finds oneself completely engrossed in the story and hardly aware of the reader. In short, this recording is an excellent example for those who feel that an audiobook reader should be neutral, interpreting as little as possible. In this case it works, no doubt helped by fine writing and a mystery that is more intellectual puzzle than emotional thriller. Cullen's reading is not, in fact, flat, but finely controlled understatement: intelligent and free of distractions. Unusually clear sound further enhances the transparent effortlessness of this recording.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
