Bennett, an Englishman living in France who seeks lucrative employment, finds instead the adventure of a lifetime as he joins in the search for the truffles formula. Case flawlessly performs the many roles calling for British, Italian, French and Japanese accents. He smoothly switches from one voice and accent to the next, as well as expertly changes character. Performing Shimo, the Japanese bodyguard, Case uses controlled, firm vocal tones. In contrast, as Anna, Bennett's co-worker and lover, he uses a breathless, enticing voice. Case's narrative style includes his unique timing of lines and his special technique of emphasizing words by elongating syllables. Case's enlivening reading is cleverly executed to complement the story's components.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
