Very British in flavor, this rather grotesque fantasy strikes one as the work of a Roald Dahl imitator who, while he has his moments, lacks the master's touch. Plucky, preadolescent Dakota Pink and her best friend, Treacle, make high adventure out of life in a surrealistic setting of urban poverty, surrounded by eccentric and largely incompetent adults. Josie Lawrence sets this often clumsy effort in the best possible light with an enthusiastic reading that makes the most of every bit of color and wit. Roald Dahl it isn't, but it's a cut above almost anything on television.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
