Margolin's third legal thriller featuring lawyer Amanda Jaffee is proof positive that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts--especially when boosted by a competent reader like this one. Nanette Savard saves the day by propelling listeners through some implausible legal shenanigans and equally trite dialogue. Jaffee defends a troubled man accused of murder while her father, also a lawyer, is hired to defend a gangster, similarly accused. Both are unaware that the cases are linked and evidence has been tampered with. Savard's crisp reading makes the listening experience pleasurable. She is also better than most female readers at portraying male characters.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
