Definitely not H.G. Wells! Eloquent, passionate, sardonic, shocking and surreal, this first novel of Ellison won a well-deserved Pulitzer and has since become a classic of American literature. An unnamed African-American tells of how he discovered that he is invisible to whites and how he learned to make the most of it. Narrator James does a merely serviceable job here, sometimes misinterpreting the text and at no time investing much of himself in it. If he has not given us the tour-de-force the material demands, he at least has delivered the considerable beauty of the writing.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
