by Raven Belasco ; read by Amber Benson ‧ RELEASE DATE: Jan. 22, 2024
Amber Benson performs a fun paranormal adventure in which a librarian attempts to escape from a book-loving vampire. Anushka, better known as Noosh, has trouble filtering her thoughts, especially around a mysterious but charming stranger. The stranger, who turns out to be Vlad Dracula--Sandu in the present day--sweeps Noosh off her feet in a whirlwind romance. But she soon learns that vampire society is tearing itself apart. Benson's narration is the biggest appeal of this story; she imbues each character with a subtle voice. She even gives Sandu a unique vampire accent. She captures Noosh's inner monologue with a deft balance between the character's self-deprecating humor and endearing tone. The story stumbles a bit, but Benson keeps the performance afloat for an enjoyable listen.

Chang reimagines 1910s Shanghai with a Gothic flair, brought to life by Katharine Chin, Saskia Maarleveld, and Caroline Hewitt. Lisan Liu, portrayed by Chin, is hired by American heiress Caroline Stanton, portrayed by Maarleveld, as her secretary at Lennox Manor. Hewitt provides the voice of Rosalie, an ill-fated singer. The manor’s dark past and crumbling walls fill Lisan with dread as secrets from her own past begin to resurface. Nightmares of a woman in red plague Lisan, while Caroline is preoccupied with family and financial woes. When Caroline’s husband takes ill, whispers of a curse stir up fear amongst the staff.

Aysha Kala crafts a delicate performance surrounding a surprisingly complex story about a carousel. The carousel, originally built in 1900s Paris, is shrouded in a mystery and linked to a history of missing children. Kala narrates as Maisie, an immigrant just arriving in Chicago in 1920, uncovers the dark secret of said carousel alongside Det. Laurent. Kala's elegant narration style blends perfectly with the thrilling writing, clever descriptions of the magical settings, and a cunning mystery, delivering a catchy listen for a wide audience. The dialogue between the protagonists progresses the plot while also allowing for satisfying character development. Kala's narration is a mix of whimsical wonder and gritty determination.
