This might be a Gothic romance. Here are craggy Irish cliffs; clashing waves; handsome, unsuitable men. Or an Irish myth. Certainly, there are mythic complications in Clodagh Sheehy's experiences. Her father died before she was born. Her twin sister died when she was 5. Her mother, Agatha, is as cold as the sea spirit she is rumored to be. Regina McBride creates a nineteen-year odyssey for these two women with the certain touch of a poet. What could be ordinary becomes rarified. Terry Donnelly's performance enhances the magic in Clodagh's story. Her voice rings true and clear; her accents are completely winning. A startling discovery near the end momentarily turns drama to melodrama; however, McBride's controlled writing and Donnelly's character interpretation elevate the novel firmly beyond that.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
