Nausicaa, the first-person narrator of this novel, resents that only men--Homer's sons--are allowed to sing the great stories. As she maneuvers to save her father's kingdom in the ancient Greek world, she gathers stories to weave into her own epic. Narrator Karen Cass brings intrigue, a budding romance, and pitched battle to life with the cool detachment of the exceptionally bright teenager that Nausicaa is--along with a teenager's occasional moodiness and petulance. The many characters are clearly delineated, and the pace never flags. Cass's reading carries us into a story as modern as it is thrilling. On a deeper level, its Homeric scholarship is a wonderful bonus.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
