Richard McGonagle narrates this Western by the author of THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY. Its entertaining cast of characters includes Winchell Dear, a longtime professional gambler; Sonia, his Native American housekeeper; Pablo, a Mexican drug mule; Peter Long Grass, a Native American squatting on Winchell's ranch; and Luther, a seven-foot rattlesnake. Waller's writing style is often uneven--the dialogue is sometimes clunky, and no transitions lead the reader from one character to another. Nevertheless, McGonagle moves the story along, capturing the essence of the characters and building the suspense. His warm voice adds richness to the listening experience in a top-notch performance.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
