Robin Miles narrates this gut-wrenching story with a perfect mix of emotions and subtlety. Mireille Duval Jameson's father grew up poor, but now he's one of the richest men in Haiti. His wealth puts his family in danger as Haiti is experiencing a spate of kidnappings. Gay's story is so dramatic that a large performance by a narrator would be too much, but Miles understands the characters and their motivations perfectly. Her performance is always just big enough to support Gay's story--evoking exactly what Mireille is going through during her drawn-out captivity and her difficult attempts to heal afterward.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
