A CASE OF MICE AND MURDER

THE TRIALS OF GABRIEL WARD, BOOK 1

Narrator Matthew Lloyd-Davies takes on the first installment of this series featuring a somewhat OCD barrister who becomes involved in a copyright case and a murder investigation. In a story based on true events in the Inner Temple of the Inns of Court (UK) in 1901, Ward stumbles upon the dead body of the Lord Chief Justice of England. Pompous magistrates and judges team up with the local police and Scotland Yard to investigate the murder. Ward's investigation revolves around the identity of a children's book author who writes under pseudonym. Lloyd-Davies uses a rather off-putting snooty-edged voice for all the characters. He dampens the tension through his detached performance and gives no indication of plot shifts.

      18mm BLUES

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
