As if it weren't bad enough that Dr. Silvia Strange, the psychiatrist/ heroine of Lovett's latest mystery, has just given court testimony that has released a confessed rapist and murderer--now a mysterious villain known only as "Killer" is out to get her, as well. Lindsay Crouse's intense voice--although periodically lacking in tonal variation--lends itself naturally to Dr. Strange's adventures and musings. We hear her weariness as she slumps onto her couch with a well-deserved martini. We almost feel the blows as she's attacked after what was meant to be a relaxing shower. Violent and disturbingly plausible in its plot, ACQUIRED MOTIVES sweeps listeners into its dark puzzle.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
