by Sharon M. Draper ; read by JD Jackson ‧ RELEASE DATE: 2009
At the end of THE BATTLE OF JERICHO, when her boyfriend, Josh, died in a pledge stunt gone wrong, November Nelson thought her life had hit bottom. But it's two months later, and she has just realized she's carrying Josh's child. Sharon Draper has a talent for getting into the heads of urban teens and telling their stories with compassion. She presents the teen pregnancy in this sequel realistically, weighing the questions, fears, and choices a young pregnant girl must deal with. JD Jackson does an adequate job of telling the story, although some of his phrasing seems unnatural. However, since this is November's story, a female narrator would have given the story more credibility.

A powerful journey toward authenticity.
Shannon Tyo’s narration fully embodies the prideful spirit of Elena Ok, a 17-year-old Korean American influencer who lives in luxury thanks to her brand and her family’s clothing business. But when the Oks lose everything, the family moves to a remote farm town and into a rundown house with no Wi-Fi or furniture. Tyo perfectly captures Elena’s misery; she’s undone not just by the lack of reception but also the feeling that she’s being left out of her family’s efforts to unite and move forward. Listeners understand Elena’s pain and feelings of loss through dialogue that sparks with sarcasm. Tyo marks Elena’s gradual understanding that true connection is with family and community, not the empty superficiality that dominated her past.

Taylor Meskimen channels teenage angst to tell this story of former best friends. Wealthy Madison rules the school, and only special friends warrant an invitation to her exclusive birthday party, held in a virtual-reality world. When social outcast Bree receives an invitation, is it to make amends or to seek revenge? Meskimen hits every heightened emotional note, from the haughty tones of a spoiled queen bee to the wheedling voices of sycophants. She flavors her narration with a perfect blend of reactions that lend authenticity to her performance: scoffs, screeching laughter, and hisses of rage.
Meskimen drops listeners solidly into the depths of teenage despair and hope in this thrilling, futuristic ride. (Thriller. 14-18)Pub Date: Feb. 24, 2026
