by Sharon Stone ; read by Sharon Stone ‧ RELEASE DATE: March 30, 2021
This is a remarkably special audiobook listening experience--difficult, challenging, not entirely coherent, but nonetheless moving. Internationally known beauty, philanthropist, social activist, and skilled actor Sharon Stone narrates her own courageous memoir, which she wrote after her recovery from a massive stroke. Her brain injury seems apparent throughout her narration. It's sometimes distracting, sometimes not. Her pauses at the ends of sentences, paragraphs, and chapters can seem unduly lengthy, and there are some struggles with enunciation. However, this extremely candid work reveals the tremendous strength and resilience that she has exhibited since her stressful childhood. Stone simply does not accept failure, and her fierce determination is evident throughout her performance.

For this memoir, Minnelli worked with her best friend, Michael Feinstein, to offer an extraordinary glimpse into her life both in front of and behind the camera. At 80, Minnelli performs her own audiobook in high style. The content is candid, funny, and revealing, if slightly sanitized. It’s all here—Minnelli’s collaborations with songwriters Kander and Ebb and her many marriages and affairs, triumphs, disasters, substance use, and, most recently, 11 years of sobriety. The only drawback when listening is that it’s not always clear when the narrative is moving on to a new theme.

Christina Applegate (Married….With Children and Dead to Me) narrates her memoir with clear purpose and emotional rawness. She was raised by a caring but sometimes overwhelmed single mother, and Applegate's voice crackles with emotion as she relays her turbulent childhood, anchored by moments of solace she found while acting. She mines more than 40 years of her own journal entries, sometimes quoting direct passages. Applegate’s battles with body image and anorexia, as well as her present-day challenges due to multiple sclerosis, are painful to hear about. She’s candid as she details an abusive romantic relationship, and listeners will cheer for her as she settles into a happy marriage and raises her daughter, Sadie.
