Charles Paris is off in the provinces, playing many, many parts in MACBETH, "the Scottish play," "the play with a curse." Between his bouts of drinking and appearances on stage, Charles is desperately trying to discover who murdered the vile ham, Warnock Belvedere, who plays King Duncan. The trouble is that everyone is relieved the old upstager is dead. Simon Prebble is brilliant as each actor, and each actor in role, and each actor parodying every other actor. Every character remains differentiated to the listener, even when mimicking each other or sloshed to the gills. This is a miracle of narration, so complex as to make the listener whoop with pleasure at Prebble's verbal acrobatics.
