At six cassettes, this modest but engaging story about an ancient flying saucer discovered during a geological survey doesn’t overstay its welcome. Also helping things along is Dick Hill’s breezy reading, which mixes just the right amount of gravity and tongue-in-cheek delivery for this light adventure. Hill invests humanity and humor in young adventurer Rip Cantrell and his friends as they attempt to keep the saucer’s advanced technology from falling into the wrong hands. Coonts has a sizable following as a reliable writer of involving techno-thrillers, and this is a good way to try out one of his works.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
