Tommy Carmellini, former cat burglar, is tied to the straight and narrow by a simple commitment to the CIA: Serve or go to jail. Carmellini is assigned to Paris, where he works with his old boss. Their job is to find the connection between the director of the French intelligence service and his secret Al Qaeda agent. Dennis Boutsikaris packs his presentation with a dazzling variety of accents and characters of both genders. However, he is at his best as Carmellini. Boutsikaris provides a unique vocal identity with an expression and tempo that match Tommy’s wiseacre attitude. With just a little imagination, listeners get the feeling they are sharing a beer with Carmellini while he tells his fascinating story. It doesn’t get much better than this.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
