Ready for another heroic dog story? Don't say no too quickly. This is a real nail biter made all the more endearing because the dog is blind, and one of the children is a deaf Korean orphan, whose adoptive family is struggling with his condition. Winner of more than eleven literary awards, this adventure exudes warmth through rich, minutely drawn characterizations. The reader, Christina Moore, has an earnest, youthful voice that seems perfectly matched with the fourteen-year-old narrator's sometimes pouting, sometimes excited, sometimes anxious tones. Another heroic dog story, but this time first-rate family entertainment.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
