Sandhogs are urban miners, laborers who dig tunnels beneath New York City. This novel, not for the faint of heart, has language and action as raw as the working conditions the Sandhogs face every shift. Reader Ron McLarty seems to electrify Kelly's words with a delivery as streetwise and gritty as a construction worker's tongue. His expressive style and careful pronunciation add dimension to the various ethnic dialects and the four-letter language of these tough people. Through all of the crusty exteriors, Kelly and McLarty bring us face to face with the inner workings of a broad assortment of people, some good and some very bad, living the life they've chosen. Uncomfortable and many times unpleasant. But, well worth the time.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
