In its plotting, characterization, and atmosphere, this first novel seems influenced by prime-time soap operas. Its style, on the other hand, seems more influenced by a good English teacher. A young, irresistibly sexy, foul-mouthed, and ruthlessly ambitious heroine--granddaughter of a famed matinee idol--aspires to stardom against her parents' will. Barbara Rosenblat employs her legendary skill, flair, and imagination, as well as a delightful shamelessness in rendering scenes of sex and decadence. Only her phrasing strikes one as below her wonted standards--that is, it's good but not excellent, punctuated by a bit of wheezing.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
