Narrator Oliver Wyman returns with his own full cast of voices in the latest addition to Dorsey's Serge Storm series. Listeners will be invited to ride along with Serge, a brilliant and maniacal character who has a passion for and deep knowledge of all things Floridian. He is joined by his always buzzed sidekick, Colman, whose questions provide Serge an opportunity to share his knowledge. The result is funny, irreverent, violent, and educational. Wyman masterfully differentiates the characters, male, female, drunk, stoned, and sober, including a precocious teenage girl. Multiple plots over different time periods and locations, along with many characters, make the story a bit challenging to follow as an audiobook. But fans of the series will just go with the flow and enjoy the ride.

Novelist Benet Archdale and housemaid Carol Stratford are two young, single parents who have no reason to know each other. They become tangled in a nightmarish spiral of kidnap, fraud, family violence and death. Ruth Rendell creates psychological suspense in thrillers that are compulsively readable or, in this case, listenable. British actress Imelda Staunton's reading is perfectly paced, and the characters are well defined. You'll have a hard time turning it off.

With the help of their precocious son, Ramses, the intrepid pair unravel this mystery in crowded bazaars, desert camps and the heart of the Black Pyramid. Barbara Rosenblat's reading fully measures up to the tale. She is a master of timing and nuance. Rosenblat's power for character interpretation has grown with each book in this amusing series. This is the best one yet.
