Tim Gerard Reynolds's gripping narration ramps up the intensity of this action-packed thriller in which nothing is as it seems. Seventeen-year-old Peter Blankman lives a fraught existence, retreating to the predictable world of mathematics to keep his crippling anxiety at bay. He barely copes with everyday problems, so when his mother, a brilliant neuroscientist, is brutally attacked, and his twin sister, Bel, is implicated, Peter's world falls apart. Reynolds communicates Peter's panic-stricken state of mind as he is disoriented by the maelstrom around him and no longer knows whom to trust. While Reynolds's voice is slightly too mature, the force and momentum he brings to the story are palpable. Breathtaking pacing sustains the tension from start to finish and will leave listeners thrilled, horrified, and wanting more.

Listeners follow Merry, the longbow girl, one of the best archers in her town. When she finds a magical portal in the forest that takes her back to sixteenth-century Wales, she must use her skills to win an archery contest in order to help her ancestors keep their land. While narrator Emily Wilden brings protagonist Merry to life with a rich Welsh accent, her narration seems uneven at times. All the period characters have accents that reflect the setting of the story and transport listeners to Wales. Listeners who enjoy historical fiction and a bit of fantasy will be charmed by this tale of determination, hope, and family.
