This production wonderfully enhances Hillerman's tale of adventure and intrigue in Southeast Asia. The abridgment is subtle and restrained, removing only a minor subplot. A versatile actor, Sanders speaks with a cool, journalistic style appropriate to the character of narrator "Moon" Mathias. The newspaper articles, dispatches and news flashes that introduce each chapter place the story of Moon's search for his dead brother's missing daughter within the context of the last days of the Vietnam War. Voices for different characters are varied without being forced or clichéd, even when Asian and female characters are portrayed. Appropriate music introduces and concludes each side.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
