Not only has the author chosen the perfect title for her charming work, she’s also created an unusual love story from diverse perspectives. When Venus's romance with Clint crumbles, she decides to cut off her long, gorgeous locks. This act symbolizes so much related to the self- image of black women that it's a radical act. Narrator Lisa Renée Pitts is outstanding as the story's primary character, and she absolutely shines portraying the older relatives. Her delivery of the slightly raunchy banter between three old guys is sheer fun, and her depictions of the mother-daughter exchanges are priceless. The topics of sexual harassment, living up to family expectations, and the lives of black Americans are genuine and relevant. Valuable life lessons are offered without being preachy and should appeal to a wide audience.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
