It's always a positive sign when a movie adaptation encourages its audience to go to the original book. Vikram Seth's AN EQUAL MUSIC has a different effect: It's a marvelous novel that drives readers to their CD collections. The narrator is a violinist in a string quartet who rekindles his romance with a (now married) woman with whom he had fallen in love many years before. The story of their love, told in language that is fittingly musical, is told rapturously by Steven Crossley--he is perfectly suited to the main character, and his handling of female voices is uncommonly good. Together, Seth and Crossley do not sound a single false note.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
