In this amusing novel of love, crime, and painful one-liners, Adler tells the story of Mickey Fine, social director at a Catskills summer resort that caters to organized crime. When he falls in with Mutzie Feder, a Mob hit man's girlfriend, the two will need to use all their wits to survive. Tom Weiner works the narrative, switching between an assertive edge and a smoother voice. He shines in the character voices, which are mostly vocal caricatures but are apropos for the story's setting and tone. Perhaps most impressive is Weiner's execution of the many one-line jokes throughout the book. He makes them amusing despite their corniness.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
