If you’ve been hunting for a fast-paced thriller, pick up this third installment in Griffin’s Presidential Agent series. It starts seconds after The Hostage ends, but you needn’t have listened to the latter to fully enjoy this. Having thwarted a nuclear disaster and uncovered a figure in an international scandal involving Iraqi oil, presidential operative Charley Castillo now hunts for the culprits who committed two related murders. You must admire Dick Hill’s smooth, exciting performance as Castillo flits from country to country on his quest. Hill gracefully transitions from character to character, whether German, French, Russian, Spanish, or Hungarian. They all sound authentic when spoken by Hill. He is also a master of the frequent military diction that Griffin’s characters are known for.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
