Drawing on her own deeply held Christian faith, Chin breaks down her experiences and recommendations into a dozen broader headings, like “Self-assurance,” “Confidence,” or “Conviction.” A group of these headings revolve around different discussions of faith itself: “Faith: Live it!” or “Faith: An Enduring Companion.” All of these chapters include quotations from Scripture, all contextualized to address perennial challenges to believers. Part of the challenge is to build one’s arsenal of faith-filled practices, which the author compares to knitting. A strong element running through these meditations is the awareness that religious life can be full of doubt and disappointment. Give thanks, she urges her readers, even when it seems like your very dreams are dying. “I know that fear sometimes finds us quicker than faith,” Chin writes, “but once you have started to put faith into practice, fear disappears.” In her zeal, Chin sometimes wanders into error. Occasionally the error is just a flatly false statement, as when she declares that “faith is built on evidence,” although Scripture defines faith as the conviction of things unseen. Or when she claims that if the faithful “do the frog” (fully rely on God), their financial bills “will be taken care of by Him,” overlooking the obvious fact that if Christians trust God to take care of their mortgage, they’ll lose their homes in short order. But her brightly optimistic conviction overcomes these lapses. She’s at her strongest when encouraging her fellow Christians to believe even at their lowest point and rely on the Almighty. “Shout for help, and Jesus will come to your rescue,” she writes. “As a matter of fact, He is right by your side just waiting for you to ask.”
