BIBLE PREDICTS TRUMP FALL

BY Kermit Zarley • POSTED ON Feb. 18, 2022

A noted Christian author takes aim at Donald Trump and his evangelical supporters.

As a 30-year professional golfer who co-founded the official PGA Tour Bible Study group and has authored more than a half-dozen Christian-themed books, including Moses Predicted COVID-19 (2020), Zarley has a long record of promoting his “lifetime evangelical” faith. Unlike many of his fellow White evangelicals, Zarley (who “voted for Republican presidents all my life until lately”) believes that former President Donald Trump was, and continues to be, “unfit for the job and a danger to democracy.” This book, part four in a planned series on biblical prophecy, argues that Trump’s personal and political behavior, from his narcissism to his overt sexual indiscretions, are antithetical to Christianity and the values found in the Bible. Written chronologically from Trump’s 2015 presidential campaign through the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, with a short introductory biography of Trump’s upbringing and business record, Zarley covers the major events, scandals, and blunders of the Trump administration through the lens of a dismayed Christian. Most chapters address specific incidents of the Trump presidency, such as his impeachment hearings and his handling of Covid-19, but others take a more holistic view, comparing, for instance, “the megalomaniac” Trump to Christ in their opposing views on success, judgment, and love. Originally published on the author’s blog at Patheos, the book’s 200 short chapters have been lightly edited to avoid repetition and make for a smoother read. And while Zarley is convincing in many of his political takes, which are typically backed by ample footnotes, the book nevertheless reads more like a compilation of op-eds than a seamless original narrative. Given the work’s admission that “Trump’s political division has hurt families all across America,” in particular Christian homes divided in their political allegiances to Trump, Zarley’s willingness to become a target of right-wing ire is commendable, considering his lifetime investment in evangelical circles. Whether he succeeds in his goal of “deprogramming supporters of President Trump,” however, is yet to be seen.

A persuasive, well-argued case against Trump by a prominent evangelical.

Moses Predicted COVID-19

This small, unique book was written in the early months of COVID-19. The author first relates that all nine infectious-disease pandemics that have occurred in the world since the Spanish Flu of 1918, thus in 102 years, were caused by zoonosis in which a coronavirus transferred from an animal to a human. Zarley reveals that in perhaps every case, that animal was "unclean" as deemed by Moses in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14 in the Bible and therefore should not be eaten. In four of these pandemics, zoonosis likely came from bats declared "unclean." Zarley asserts that this alarming connection between coronavirus pandemics and Moses' dietary laws should cause humans to avoid eating "unclean" animals and stop encroaching on the habitat of those that are wild. The author concludes this phenomena is evidence of the existence of the God of the Jews and Christians.

Moses Predicted COVID-19

This book attempts to solve the debate between Protestants and Pentecostals, about baptism in the Holy Spirit, with an innovative proposal. Protestants claim Spirit baptism occurs at the same time as conversion. But Pentecostals contend Spirit baptism occurs after conversion and is evidenced by speaking in tongues. Zarley proposes that this riddle is solved by properly understanding "the keys of the kingdom of heaven" that Jesus promised to give the apostle Peter (Matt. 16.19. Those keys were Peter's presence and/or preaching of the gospel for the first time to the Bible's three classifications of people: Jews (Acts 2), Samaritans (Acts 8), and Gentiles (Acts 10). With the Jews and Samaritans, Spirit baptism occurred subsequent to conversion with outward evidence such as Jews speaking in tongues. But with the Gentiles, Spirit baptism came simultaneously with conversion, and they spoke in tongues. Peter was then finished using his three keys in opening the kingdom of God to all people. Afterwards, Spirit baptism has occurred at conversion, with signs such as tongues-speaking no longer needed. Five New Testament scholars endorse this book on its back cover. World-renown Dr. James D. G. Dunn, an eminent authority on this subject among Protestants, says he finds Zarley's unique proposal "somewhat intriguing." Dr. Scot McKnight relates, "It is a wonder that someone has not suggested this theory before." Dr. Grant Osborne claims this "debate . . . is long standing and divisive. It is in need of fresh eyes, and Zarley has provided that. I strongly recommend this book."

Solving the Samaritan Riddle: Peter's Kingdom Keys Explain Early Spirit Baptism

This innovative, nonfiction book explores a mysterious third-day motif which occurred in some of the most important events in the ancient history of Israel recorded in the Bible. These texts say something significant occurred on the third day. Oftentimes, it was God rescuing a person or the nation of Israel during a great crisis. For instance, on the third day--a Semitic idiom that means the same as three days--Abraham offered Isaac (Genesis 22.4), God came down on Mt. Sinai (Exodus 19.11), Israel crossed the Jordan River to take the promised land (Joshua 1.11), and Queen Esther saved the Jews (Esther 5.1). Zarley interprets these as types that forecast something in the future, such as Jesus' resurrection on the third day or his second coming that Zarley says will occur early in the third millennium after Jesus earthly departure. Jesus did this when he was asked to perform a sign. So he said of his generation, "No sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so for three days and three nights the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth" (Matt. 12.40), referring to his resurrection. In this case the sign is a type, meaning it typifies something that will occur in the future.
