Michael Wendroff has an MBA in marketing from NYU, and was inducted into their Hall of Fame. His MBA thesis was on "Marketing in the publishing industry," and was excerpted in the industry trade journal, "Publisher's Weekly," so he actually got paid to write his thesis!
His career has been in marketing, and it was the Covid pandemic that gave him the time to write his thriller. The impetus for the story was what his mother said to him the moment he was born: “Oh! How nice to see you, Again.”
He grew up in a publishing/author milieu, as his mother was an editor at NYC publishing houses (watching his mother scribbling in red ink on manuscript pages at home on weekends prepared him for his own editor's comments!). Plus she remarried a literary agent, Henry Morrison, so Michael was friendly with many authors (Dean Koontz, Lawrence Block, Joseph Finder, Eric Van Lustbader, etc), and even spent a vacation with Robert Ludlum. Watching Ludlum hand-write his 450 page novels on yellow legal pads didn't dissuade Michael from trying to write a novel (though he's thankful for his PC).
Michael's debut novel, What Goes Around, was launched in the USA, UK, and Australia in hardcover, eBook, and audiobook, and now in trade paperback. Foreign language rights have been sold in Italian, Japanese, and Hungarian. Based on excellent sales and reviews, his publisher, Bloomsbury/Head of Zeus, has given him a contract for a second novel.
Fun fact: Michael's great-grandfather was brought over by Thomas Edison from the University of Copenhagen to work with him in his New Jersey labs. He holds a number of patents, including for plastic buttons (he became known around town as "The Button King"). Michael proudly wears button- down shirts whenever he can.

WHAT GOES AROUND

BY Michael Wendroff • POSTED ON Oct. 15, 2024

Two police detectives fighting crime first have to stop fighting with each other in Wendroff’s debut thriller.

There’s no love lost—but a lot of rivalry between—police detectives Jack Ludlum and Jill Jarred. Two-hundred-pound former Special Ops soldier Jack thinks that because being a cop is a tough and dangerous job, it is “not something for a woman.” But once he and Jill are made partners and he sees how resourceful and committed she is to the job, he changes his tune—especially after their fingers intertwine following a high five. Their police work has them investigating a militant white supremacist group and also looking for a possible serial killer. Meanwhile, a lonely, alienated teen named Saint fights urges to join the supremacists while trying to convince his single mother that, at the age of 18, he is a man (“I can think for myself”). Saint has not had an easy life; his father, Skyler, who he never knew, is dead, and years ago, Jill and Jack helped to put his grandmother Gloria in prison. Now, Saint wrestles with his alter ego, “El Diablo.” The detectives continue investigating, the bad guys keep committing and plotting crimes—and then a sudden, otherworldly shift occurs in the story; this wild swing may appeal to some readers and turn off others. The shifts from first to third person, the growing attraction between the two detectives, and the book’s overall intrigue keep things engaging. The characters are well developed, and the suspense level is high; however, the plot does go in many different directions, and the novel would benefit from a more streamlined story. Also, too many characters shed too many tears too many times. Pro and con immigration attitudes add to the timeliness of the narrative.

A spirited combination of romance, police work, and murder.
