by A. J. Cronin ‧ RELEASE DATE: May 10, 1933
The new novel by the author of HATTER'S CASTLE holds promise of greater popular success than the intervening book, THREE LOVES. Although it has not the conventional ""happy ending"" it does close on a less depressing note, and the story of the regeneration of a doctor, shot to pieces nervously by the tragic denouement of a scientific experiment, has a romantic appeal that the other books lacked. The scene opens at the hour of sailing of a small banana boat bound for the Canary Islands, the characters are the ill-assorted steamer passengers, and the challenge comes in meeting the catastrophe of yellow fever on landing at the islands. There is a suggestion of the BRUSHWOOD BOY theme in the love story; and - to make a more modern comparison - something of the psychological slant of FOUR FRIGHTENED PEOPLE. Dr. Cronin is not a one-book man. His public will be widened by this volume.
