New adventure for likable anthropologist-sleuth, newlywed Professor Gideon Oliver (The Dark Place). Honeymooning in England with forest-ranger wife Julie, Gideon becomes involved with a Dorset dig run by old acquaintance Nate Marcus, who seems on the verge of making a fool of himself with a bizarre theory based on one of his finds. He does exactly that before a two-man commit; tee--archaeologist Paul Arbuckle and Frederick Robyn of the Wessex Antiquarian Society. Meanwhile, the body of missing dig-member Randy Alexander has been identified and declared murdered in a fascinating if gruesome display of expertise by our hero. Gideon's discovery of the hoax played on Marcus, the arrival on the scene of his mentor, Abe Goldstein, a murderous attack on him by a killer dog and a second murder thicken the plot with diminishing returns. Too much talk, undermotivated murders and a pace that lags too often undermine an otherwise solid, always literate effort.
