THE BOMBING RUN

Matt Erridge is back again, with dog (Mathilda) and Porsche (Baby) and that dim, quaintly macho narrating style of his. This time he's in Bruges, taking a fancy to Maggie Norman--who's guiding a tour-group around Belgium. But the tour quickly turns sour when elderly tourist Abraham Gluyas is found dead in the street. And since Gluyas' will leaves $100,000 to Maggie (an old pal), she's a suspect--and so is Matt, who now travels around with the group. But: could the murder (and subsequent attacks in Ghent, Antwerp, and Brussels) really be connected to a series of anti-NATO bombings in those cities? Could one of Maggie's tourists be the terrorist? So wonders Matt--though it takes him just short of forever to figure out a major clue: doggie Matilda's violent reaction to the tourists and their luggage. A thin, old-fashioned plot, as usual, with a Most Likely Suspect and no surprises--but there's also some minor amusement this time, thanks to the tourist complaints and Matt's uncomplimentary comments about Belgium.
