THE GARBAGE COLLECTOR

Matt Erridge, now working in Switzerland but living in a village on the French side of a border lake, finds himself in hectic, convoluted trouble again--starting with two deaths in the immediate neighborhood: the local garbage collector is found drowned; neighbor Edouard de Montbard, fat and shady, is found shot to death. Furthermore, soon after Erridge beds down with the comely (non-grieving) widow Montbard, she too gets hers. What is it the killers are after? A missing hoard of gold? A fortune in diamonds? Or some stock-certificates connected to a major embezzlement scam going on within the Geneva/Zurich banking system? Erridge, now being constantly followed by the two hired thugs, goes after the ruthless homosexual mastermind of this rather blurry scheme--playing cat-and-mouse games with him in Paris, driving back and forth between Geneva and Zurich, ultimately cornering him in a scenic shootout. Lazy and colorless work in Stein's least appealing vein--making one long for the modest charms of N.Y.'s George Bagby.
