HORSESHOE HARRY AND THE WHALE

Story hour audiences on both sides of the great divide can get a kick out of Horseshoe Harry from Wyoming, who sets off due East to see the ocean, is shanghaied from a Boston bar to the whaler Gentle Gertie, shoots off both the port and starboard sides of the captain's mustache in an abortive attempt to turn the ship around, but does manage to get the whole crew home, with a hold full of whale oil, by charming the big sea mammals with an old cowpoke's tune he plays on the captain's bassoon. Not bad for someone who doesn't know a harpoon from a giant Apache arrow--and, like Harry, Quentin Blake's loose, rapid sketches prove equally hearty on the plains and at sea.
