RIDE THE FAR WIND

A Chinese pirate ship appears in the midst of a typhoon and carries the boy Malu away from his South Sea Island home. When the ship arrives in Canton, Malu, rather than be sold into slavery, manages to escape the ship. He finds shelter with S'oong Li, a Buddhist monk, and the two journey to Foochow (where Malu can get passage home) with the pirates in close pursuit. The delicately written text combines superb adventure with a well-realized Oriental aura and evokes the spirit of 8th century Canton. Malu's friendship for S'oong Li is handled with great tenderness and sympathy. The simple woodcuts by Robert William Hinds are tastefully done and reflect the character of the story.
