This scarcely needs the 100 photographs to capture the interest of anyone who cares about houses that represent our American heritage. Miss Rothery, in what we regret to not is probably her last work, has applied her rare gift for combining a sense of region and period, a flavor of the essentials that contributed to the immortality or the response of her chosen topic, with factual data, descriptive in nature. To a large extent (with a few notable exceptions) these are uncelebrated houses, dating back, many of them, to colonial times, and forward to the period of the War Between the States. She challenges the assumption of superiority on the part of each regional section in turn:- the region nearest Washington, where Alexandria and Mt. Vernon are best known; Northern Virginia, Winchester and the Shenandoah, Staunton, Lexington, Roanoke, Southwest Virginia, Lynchburg, South-side Virginia, Jefferson's country, Fredericksburg, the Rappahanock, Stratford, the Eastern Shore, Richmond and the James. One gets not only the individual houses, but a sense of the period in which they were dominant, economically, socially, politically, as centers of activity, and the people who owned them. Georgian, Federal, Greek Revival- each type is represented again and again.
