AN EDGE OF THE FOREST

When a baby lamb is pursued to the edge of the forest by a wild sheep-dog, he becomes the ward of a beautiful wild leopard. Despite the natural hostilities of the jungle, the little orphan is befriended by all--the snake, the owl, the fawns. Although ordinarily each animal obeys his own laws of sympathy and antagonism, they suspend active hostility, bound by their love of the lamb. And it is a philosophical young shepherd who finally achieves redemption because of the lamb, facing the powerful jungle creatures unflinchingly, neither harming nor succumbing to them, as he restores the black lamb to its flock. A subtle, poetic story into which biblical themes blend with animal reason. Moments of real beauty, sometimes marred by sentimentality, but generally maintaining suspense through the author's unique gift for lyrical invention.
