The Fletcher family, young Becky and her mother and father, are the central figures in a story that depicts the history and social conditions surrounding the famous run for Oklahoma in 1893 and, with a small interjection of plot, sees the Fletchers settled on a choice piece of land. Pinning their hopes on Pa's ability to ride their swift horse to a good claim on the fateful day, the Fletchers suffer setbacks; Springer is stolen but retrieved; Pa is injured helping another man and Becky must use her ingenuity to uncover the crooked motives of a Sooner who almost jumps their claim.
