An old timer, looking back on the old West, and his fiddlefooted itinerary among Indians and Mexicans, hard rock miners and cattle bosses, trappers and buffalo hunters, with always the lure of untrammeled, untravelled space. There's his childhood there, and the five mile walk to school- (for the time that he went); the flashing acquaintance with Kit Carson (his great-uncle), Billy the Kid and Geronimo; the hardships of the pioneer woman in what was certainly no life for a lady; and the many experiences hunting, cattle driving, hauling deer and elk and antelope, trapping wild horses, fighting Indians, etc.... The nostalgia shines right through an unvarnished vernacular, gives this a certain fondness for what is essentially slow freight- westward bound.
